Tennessee Williams [Life and Works]

There were three foremost dramatists of the 20th century American drama; Eugene O’ Neill, Arthur Millar and Tennessee Williams. Tennessee Williams (1911-1983) was the pen-name of Thomas Lanier Williams. He was born in Columbus in Mississippi. His father was Cornelius Williams and mother was Edwina Williams. Tennessee’s father was a salesman and to whom Williams had a complicated relationship. His father loved work than parenting.

Williams’ family moved from Columbus to St. Louis, Missouri (a state in the U.S.A.). In 1929, he got admission at the University of Missouri to study journalism but his father forced to leave the university. He took a job as a Sales Clerk in a Shoe company under the pressure of his father. Williams was not happy of it. This was the period of depressions for him and he suffered a nervous breakdown. After recovering his health, he graduated in 1938 at the University of Iowa (a state in the U.S.A.).

In 1939, Williams came to New Orleans (a city on the Mississippi River, U.S.A.) where he changed his name from Thomas Lanier Williams to Tennessee Williams and devoted himself for writing plays. From 1939 to 1943 he wrote many plays but he did not get successful but with the publication of his play, The Glass Menagerie, in 1944 he suddenly became famous. .
